About

Portrait - Espen B RaknesMy name is Espen B. Raknes and I live in Trondheim, which is a city in the middle of Norway. I have been leaving here since 2006, when I moved here to begin my studies. In June 2011 I received my Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics with the title On Operator Splitting for the Viscous Burgers’ and Korteweg-de Vries equations from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). During the five years at the University my main subjects were physics and mathematics, and my specialization for the three last years of my Master’s degree was mathematics. To be more precise; the fields of interests were functional analysis and partial differential equations, which I wrote my thesis about. In August 2011 I started as a PhD candidate at the Department of Petroleum Engineering & Applied Geophysics at NTNU. I finished my PhD with the thesis title Three Dimensional Elastic Full Waveform Inversion in September 2015Currently, I’m working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at NTNU.

I grew up in Mosjøen which is a small city in northern part of Norway. After I finished elementary school and high school in my hometown, I moved further up north; to Finnmark, the part of Norway which is closest to the Arctic (except from Svalbard). In Finnmark I studied outdoor life for a year. During the year I spent a lot of days out in the nature; go hunting, fishing, skiing, walking, riding the dog sleigh, etc.. This was a fantastic year, which I will remember for the rest of my life. It was back then my enthusiasm for photographing started to grow.

In the beginning of 2008 I started a photoblog using Pixelpost as publishing system. For over three years I published photos regularly, and was somewhat happy with Pixelpost as CMS. However, I wanted a place where I could publish other things than just only photos. When, in addition, the development of Pixelpost stopped, a migration to another and more complete publishing system was needed. So, in July 2011 I migrated to WordPress.

As a result of the migration, and the abilities of WordPress, the focus of this page changed a bit. Using the Pixelpost system the focus was publishing only photos. However, as the year passed I wanted to have place where I also was able to publish other types of post, and not only photos. I think this is a result of the years when I was a active blogger in the years 2001-2005. The main focus for this new page is still photos and photographing in general, but in addition I will use this site to publish writings and other stuff which I think is of interests. I will try to not use this site as a personal blog where I tell what I have been doing a particular day. On the other hand, I have not decided for what kind of post (that are not photos) I will publish, and I have not decided on a topic either. So, the topics will be a surprise. I think this is the best way of doing it.

In August 2012 I got married, and as a result I changed my last name from Nilsen to Raknes. Thus, I needed to change the address to this page, which before the wedding was espennilsen.com. When I first needed to move my page to another domain name, I decided to also change the design on the page. In addition, I did a fast scan through my archives and figured out that many of the photos needed to be reprocessed (new watermark, etc.). So, instead of just do a copy and paste of my old page, the whole page with content was built up from scratch.

Through my life I have been a lot out in the wild. Therefore it is natural for me that most of my photos are from the nature. The camera is always in my backpack, and I think it is important to show people what they are missing if they only live their urban lives. The world is much bigger than the city you live in! Many that have looked to some pictures I’ve taken, have said to me “Wow, those are very nice places”, and followed up with the sentence: “You must have walked a very long distance to come there…”. Then I have looked at them, and told them that it’s just in front of their noses. The only thing they have to do is to move from the safe place they live, and walk out in God’s beautiful nature! Of course, I know that some places around the world, there’s longer between such places, but hopefully you get my point…
